January 19, 2014 | Matthew 19:10-12 - What's the Point?: Marriage, Singleness, & Living for the Glory of God

After dealing with the issue of marriage and divorce, Jesus then turns his attention to the question of marriage and singleness in Matthew 19:10-12.
10 The disciples *said to Him, “If the relationship of the man with his wife is like this, it is better not to marry.” 11 But He said to them, “Not all men can accept this statement, but only those to whom it has been given. 12 For there are eunuchs who were born that way from their mother’s womb; and there are eunuchs who were made eunuchs by men; and there are also eunuchs who made themselves eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. He who is able to accept this, let him accept it.”

Pornography is Not Just a Male Problem

You may recall from a few weeks ago our discussion of lust, sex, pornography, and adultery.  One of the things we talked about is how this is not just a young male problem, but it encompasses people of all genders and age.  Recently, the New York Times published an article on how one church is counseling women addicted to pornography.  Though it is a long article, it is fascinating to read.

Though women are more audible and seek to be noticed, pornography is becoming more popular among woman.  This means that as Christians move forward in this society, we must realize that this industry is growing in ways that we may want to refuse to believe.  We live in a highly sexual world that needs the grace of God.

February 28, 2010 - Matthew 5:27-30 - America's Pastime: Our Lust for Lust

Here finally is the audio from last Sunday's message on Lust. Sorry it has taken so long, but I had to re-record the message. So the following audio is not from Sunday, but from later on in the week. I rerecorded it because I thought the subject was too important to miss. I hope it helps.

Some More Light Reading: On Lust, Marriage, Pornography, and Cohabitation

I wanted to point everyone out on an article I wrote on the porn industry and how the recession is affecting it. The news isn't as good as one would think. Click here to read it.

The Great Recession or the Recession that Made Us Great?: Pornography and the Frugality of Lust

I also want to point everyone to a recent article written by Dr. R. Albert Mohler, Jr., President of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, regarding marriage, divorce, and cohabitation. Mohler always writes must-read articles and this is certainly one of them. Thanks to our culture's easy access to divorce and the high rate of divorce, many are beginning to live together before getting married. Mohler shows why this is a problem. To read it, click here.

February 28, 2010 - Matthew 5:27-30 - America's Pastime: Our Lust for Lustt

I haven't uploaded the audio yet, but in the meantime, the notes are available. I will post the audio when I can get them uploaded. I've had some trouble with the audio and aren't 100% sure I will be able to upload it.

Some Light Reading: On Lust

I just wanted to pass along some of the reading I did last week on the issue of lust, sexual sin, fornication, and pornography. There are a few books and articles that I will not list do to its content, but this is a good list to get you started:

Joshua Harris - Sex is Not the Problem (Lust Is): Sexual Purity in a Lust-Saturated World - this was the best and most important book I read. I highly recommend that everyone (young and old) read this book.

David Akin - God on Sex: The Creator's Ideas about Love, Intimacy, and Marriage - This is a great book on Song of Solomon.

Craig Gross - Dirty Little Secret: Uncovering the Truth Behind Porn - This is more of a book about revealing the darkness of the porn industry. Its a call for Christians to respond to the pornography problem especially addiction.

Dr. R. Albert Mohler, Jr. - Desire and Deceit: The Real Cost of the New Sexual Tolerance - Everything Mohler writes is worth writing.

Stephen Arteburn - Every Man's Battle - This is standard reading on the issue of fighting lust.

Emerson Eggerich - Love and Respect: The Love She Most Desires, the Respect he so Desperately Needs

CJ Maheny - Sex, Romance, and the Glory of God: What Every Christian Husband Needs to Know - This is a must read for every engaged and married man. Its a short and very important book.

Jim Burgen - What's the Big Deal About Sex? Loving God's Way - This is by far the easiest read on the issue of sex available, especially for young people. The author covers every major topic from a biblical perspective. I read this when I was a teenager and we went through it when I was a youth pastor. Plus, Amazon has used copies starting at a penny!

Richard and Sharon Phillips - Holding Hands, Holding Hearts - Recovering a Biblical View of Christian Dating - This is the most comprehensive treatment of what the Bible says about dating. Highly recommend.

Mark Driscoll and Gerry Breshears - Death By Love: Letters From the Cross - this is one of my favorite books of all time. Though it isn't about sex or lust, the authors take real life issues (including sexuality) and show how the cross shows us how to deal with them.

This should get you started. More could be added and I may add more later. Hope this helps!

Augustine's Pears: Lust's Lust

I am contemplated about telling the story of the great theologian's confession about when he stole some pears. Augustine account is insight, and thought simple, we can easily relate to it. Augustine recounts when he stole some pears with a group of friends and what motivated him to do it.

What fruit had I then (wretched man!) in those things, of the remembrance whereof I am now ashamed? Especially, in that theft which I loved for the theft's sake; and it too was nothing, and therefore the more miserable I, who loved it. Yet alone I had not done it: such was I then, I remember, alone I had never done it. I loved then in it also the company of the accomplices, with whom I did it? I did not then love nothing else but the theft, yea rather I did love nothing else; for that circumstance of the company was also nothing. What is, in truth? who can teach me, save He that enlighteneth my heart, and discovereth its dark corners? What is it which hath come into my mind to enquire, and discuss, and consider? For had I then loved the pears I stole, and wished to enjoy them, I might have done it alone, had the bare commission of the theft sufficed to attain my pleasure; nor needed I have inflamed the itching of my desires by the excitement of accomplices. But since my pleasure was not in those pears, it was in the offence itself, which the company of fellow-sinners occasioned.

What is interesting about this is that Augustine did not steal because he needed the pears for food, but because he wanted the excited that came with it. That is the nature of sin. It is sort of like a dog chasing his own tail. The excite is in chasing it, not actually catching it. Whenever a dog catches his tail, he is disappointed. Though he wanted that tail so badly, once he caught it, it was not what he expected it to be. Augustine felt the same way. He finally got the pears he wanted to badly, but once he got them, the thrill was gone.

Lust is very much the same way. To be consumed with lust is like Augustine and his pears or like a dog and his tail. We want pleasure, satisfaction, intimacy, or a "soul mate" so badly that when we see that person or that item or that image we think that our lives what be better. We think we will find contentment. But when we attain what we have lusted after for so long, all that happens is disappointment. All that is left to do is throw it out and chase after something else. Much like Augustine's pears.
