<a href="http://www.nathanrouse.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/JimElliot.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://www.nathanrouse.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/JimElliot.png" height="462" width="640" /></a></div>
Sometimes God just kicks you in the pants and wakes you up. Here is one
of those moments. Jim Elliot was a missionary who was killed while
trying to reach a people group who had never heard of the gospel. His
story is told in a number of books, movies (like "<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0-gg27Ltf98">End of the Spear</a>"
which I highly recommend) and documentaries (like "<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EWArGUozZok">Beyond the Gates of Splendor</a>" which I also highly recommend).<br />
<br />
Here is what he said:<br />
<blockquote>
Our
young men are going into the professional fields because they don't
'feel called' to the mission field. We don't need a call; we need a kick
in the pants. We must begin thinking in terms of 'going out,' and stop
our weeping because 'they won't come in.' Who wants to step into an
igloo? The tombs themselves are not colder than the churches. May God
send us forth.</blockquote>
Amen! We should go out rather than
expect them to come in. This is exactly what Paul says about the local
church (Ephesians 4:12). The primary responsibility of the local church
is to train believers for the purpose of going out into the world to
reach the lost. Those reached then come to the church to be trained and
sent out. Let Jim Elliot's words ring in our ears tonight.<br />
<br />
Sometimes we just need a Divine kick in the pants.<br />

<a href="http://moviewriternyu.files.wordpress.com/2013/03/judas.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://moviewriternyu.files.wordpress.com/2013/03/judas.jpg" height="360" width="640" /></a></div>
Of all of the apparent contradictions skeptics point out in Scripture, one almost universally used regards the death of Judas Iscariot who betrayed Jesus. There are only two texts in the New Testament that mention his death and, on the surface, appear to tell two very different stories. In Matthew's narrative, it says:<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<span class="text Matt-27-3" id="en-NASB-24133">3 Then when Judas, who had betrayed Him, saw that He had been condemned, he felt remorse and returned the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders,</span> <span class="text Matt-27-4" id="en-NASB-24134">4 saying, “I have sinned by betraying innocent blood.” But they said, “What is that to us? See <i>to that</i> yourself!”</span> <span class="text Matt-27-5" id="en-NASB-24135">5 And he threw the pieces of silver into the temple sanctuary and departed; and he went away and hanged himself.</span> <span class="text Matt-27-6" id="en-NASB-24136">6 The
chief priests took the pieces of silver and said, “It is not lawful to
put them into the temple treasury, since it is the price of blood.”</span> <span class="text Matt-27-7" id="en-NASB-24137">7 And they conferred together and with the money bought the Potter’s Field as a burial place for strangers.</span> <span class="text Matt-27-8" id="en-NASB-24138">8 For this reason that field has been called the Field of Blood to this day. -Matthew 27:3-8</span></blockquote>
While Luke writes in Acts:<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<span class="text Acts-1-15" id="en-NASB-26939">15 At this time Peter stood up in the midst of the brethren (a gathering of about one hundred and twenty persons was there together), and said,</span> <span class="text Acts-1-16" id="en-NASB-26940">16 “Brethren, the Scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit foretold by the mouth of David concerning Judas, who became a guide to those who arrested Jesus.</span> <span class="text Acts-1-17" id="en-NASB-26941">17 For he was counted among us and received his share in this ministry.”</span> <span class="text Acts-1-18" id="en-NASB-26942">18 (Now this man acquired a field with the price of his wickedness, and falling headlong, he burst open in the middle and all his intestines gushed out.</span> <span class="text Acts-1-19" id="en-NASB-26943">19 And it became known to all who were living in Jerusalem; so that in their own language that field was called Hakeldama, that is, Field of Blood.) -Acts 1:15-19</span> <span class="text Acts-1-20" id="en-NASB-26944"></span></blockquote>
So which is it? Did he hang himself or did he die from falling off a cliff?<br />
<br />
A number of solutions have been proposed. Usually, inerrantists like myself suggest that both are reconcilable rather easily. For example, Matthew is correct in suggesting that Judas hanged himself shortly after returning the blood money. From there, Luke's account picks up to what happened to Judas' body in that the branch might have broken or the rope might has ripped or came untied while he was dangling over a cliff.<br />
<br />
I believe this solution remains a possibility and ample supporters can easily be provided here. Before moving on, however, it is important when dealing with such apparent contradictions to consider the theology of each writer. In Matthew's case, for example, it is possible that the Evangelists is wanting to juxtapose a number of things. First, Matthew juxtaposes the repentance of Peter at the end of chapter 26 (who runs to Christ) and of Judas (who runs away from him). Secondly, there seems to be a juxtaposition between the deaths of Judas (suicide) and Jesus (sacrifice). Both are cursed in that they both hang from a tree (compare Deut. 21:23 and Gal. 3:13). Judas, on the one hand, hangs condemned for his own sins. Jesus, on the other hand, hangs as the substitute for the sins of the world.<br />
<br />
With that said, there is another possibility rarely considered. While discussing the doctrine of inerrancy in his systematic theology, <i>Christian Theology</i>, Dr. Millard Erickson writes:<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
Difficulties in explaining the biblical text should not be prejudged as indications of error. It is better to wait for the remainder of the data to come in, with the confidence that if we had all the data, the problems could be resolved. In some cases, the data may never come in. Once a tell has been excavated, it has been excavated, whether done carefully by a skilled team of archaeologists, or with a bulldozer, or by a group of thieves looking for valuable artifacts of precious metal. It is encouraging, however, that the trend is toward the resolution of difficulties as more data come in. Some of the severe problems of a century ago, such as the unknown Sargon mentioned by Isaiah (20:1), have been satisfactorily explained, and without artificial contortions. And even the puzzle of the death of Judas seems now to have a workable an reasonable solution.<br />
<br />
The specific word in Acts 1:18 that caused the difficulty regarding the death of Judas is [prenes]. For a long period of time it was understood to mean only "falling headlong." Twentieth-century investigations of ancient papyri, however, have revealed that this word has another meaning in Koine Greek. It also means ‘swelling up.’ It is now possible to hypothesize an end of Judas’s life that seems to accommodate all the data, but without the artificiality found in Gaussen’s handling of the problem. Having hanged himself, Judas was not discovered for some time. In such a situation the visceral organs begin to degenerate first, causing a swelling of the abdomen characteristic of cadavers that have not been properly embalmed. And so, ‘swelling up [Judas] burst open in the middle and his bowels gushed out.’ While there is not way of knowing whether this is what actually took place, it seems to be a workable and adequate resolution of the difficulty. (262-263)
</blockquote>
So which is it? Ultimately, it doesn't matter. The accounts are clearly reconcilable without forcing, reinterpreting, or ignoring one or the other. I prefer Erickson's proposal but find the more commonly used explanation equally as possible.<br />

<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<span class="text Matt-26-47">47 While He was still speaking, behold, Judas, one of the twelve, came up accompanied by a large crowd with swords and clubs, <i>who came</i> from the chief priests and elders of the people.</span> <span class="text Matt-26-48" id="en-NASB-24103">48 Now he who was betraying Him gave them a sign, saying, “Whomever I kiss, He is the one; seize Him.”</span> <span class="text Matt-26-49" id="en-NASB-24104">49 Immediately Judas went to Jesus and said, “Hail, Rabbi!” and kissed Him.</span> <span class="text Matt-26-50" id="en-NASB-24105">50 And Jesus said to him, <span class="woj">“Friend, <i>do</i> what you have come for.”</span> Then they came and laid hands on Jesus and seized Him.</span> </blockquote>
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<span class="text Matt-26-51" id="en-NASB-24106">51 And behold, one of those who were with Jesus reached and drew out his sword, and struck the slave of the high priest and cut off his ear.</span> <span class="text Matt-26-52" id="en-NASB-24107">52 Then Jesus *said to him, <span class="woj">“Put your sword back into its place; for all those who take up the sword shall perish by the sword.</span></span> <span class="text Matt-26-53" id="en-NASB-24108"><span class="woj">53 Or do you think that I cannot appeal to My Father, and He will at once put at My disposal more than twelve legions of angels?</span></span> <span class="text Matt-26-54" id="en-NASB-24109"><span class="woj">54 How then will the Scriptures be fulfilled, <i>which say</i> that it must happen this way?”</span></span><br />

<span class="text Matt-26-55" id="en-NASB-24110">55 At that time Jesus said to the crowds, <span class="woj">“Have you come out with swords and clubs to arrest Me as <i>you would</i> against a robber? <br />
<span class="text Matt-26-57">57 Those who had seized Jesus led Him away to Caiaphas, the high priest, where the scribes and the elders were gathered together.</span> <span class="text Matt-26-58" id="en-NASB-24113">58 But Peter was following Him at a distance as far as the courtyard of the high priest, and entered in, and sat down with the officers to see the outcome.</span><br />

<br />
<span class="text Matt-26-65" id="en-NASB-24120">65 Then the high priest tore his robes and said, “He has blasphemed! What further need do we have of witnesses? <span class="text Matt-26-67" id="en-NASB-24122">67 Then they spat in His face and beat Him with their fists; and others slapped Him,</span> <span class="text Matt-26-68" id="en-NASB-24123">68 and said, “Prophesy to us, You Christ; who is the one who hit You?”</span><br />

<span class="text Matt-26-69">69 Now Peter was sitting outside in the courtyard, and a servant-girl came to him and said, “You too were with Jesus the Galilean.”</span> <span class="text Matt-26-70" id="en-NASB-24125">70 But he denied <i>it</i> before them all, saying, “I do not know what you are talking about.”</span> <span class="text Matt-26-71" id="en-NASB-24126">71 When he had gone out to the gateway, another <i>servant-girl</i> saw him and *said to those who were there, “This man was with Jesus of Nazareth.”</span> <span class="text Matt-26-72" id="en-NASB-24127">72 And again he denied <i>it</i> with an oath, “I do not know the man.”</span> <span class="text Matt-26-73" id="en-NASB-24128">73 A little later the bystanders came up and said to Peter, “Surely you too are <i>one</i> of them; for even the way you talk gives you away.”</span> <span class="text Matt-26-74" id="en-NASB-24129">74 Then he began to curse and swear, “I do not know the man!” And immediately a rooster crowed.</span> <span class="text Matt-26-75" id="en-NASB-24130">75 And Peter remembered the word which Jesus had said, <span class="woj">“Before a rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.”</span> And he went out and wept bitterly.</span></blockquote>

My text for next Sunday is
Matthew 26:30-56 which centers around the events leading up to and
including Jesus' agony in Gethsamane. <a href="http://www.gty.org/resources/sermons/2384/restoring-deserting-disciples">In his sermon on verses 30-35</a>,
which centers on Jesus' prediction that Peter and the other disciples
would forsake him, John MacArthur suggests that Peter, of all the
disciples, was most like Judas.<br />
<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
And
then there is a marvelous contrast between pride and humility
here...between pride and humility. The pride comes through in the mouth
of Peter. Peter answered, although no one was asking, frankly, "And
said to Him," he just mouthed off, that's all, "Though all men shall be
offended because of Thee, yet will I never be offended." And you can
just see him looking at the other guys saying, "You may go, I'll stay, I
am the truest of the true." Proud, self-confident Peter...coward,
weak, ignorant but didn't know it. He is a tough case. My own feeling
is he's the closest to Judas of all the disciples. Except for the fact
that he believed, he's very little different...very self-centered, very
egotistical, very consumptive, very proud.<br />
<br />
And you know, the guy
does not learn well. He does not learn well. "Though all men shall be
offended," everybody may be trapped, all people may be trapped, "I will
never be offended, I'll stand with You all the way."</blockquote>
You <a href="http://www.gty.org/resources/sermons/2384/restoring-deserting-disciples">can read the rest here</a>.<br />
<br />
Whether or not MacArthur is right is beside the point. The main
conclusion to draw here isn't the similarities between Peter and Judas
(they are both guilty), but the differences between them. Judas
responded to guilt by committing suicide and thus stands guilty apart
from Christ. Peter, on the other hand, humbly repented and turned back
to Christ. In this sense, the two could not be more different.mcdanell99http://www.blogger.com/profile/04584791771251877677noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9196489687624481532.post-6038052380927565732014-06-17T12:38:00.002-07:002014-06-17T12:38:23.246-07:00June 15, 2014 | Matthew 26:17-30: The Lord' SupperSunday we discussed the famous scene of the Lord's Supper, an ordinance ordained by Christ himself. <blockquote class="tr_bq">
Ripley’s Believe it or Not says that the longest love letter ever written was written in 1875 and it was written from a Parisian painter by the name of Marcel de Leclure, addressed to Magdalena de Villeray and he was so in love with her that he wanted to write, ["I love you"] in French a thousand times for every year, so it was 1875, so he wrote ["I love you"] one million eight hundred and seventy five thousand times. And not being a fool he hired a secretary to do it. But, he did not want to diminish his expression of his love, so he did not tell her to write it one million eight hundred and seventy five thousand times, but he rather dictated each one to her separately. So he said it one million eight hundred and seventy thousand times and she wrote it one million eight hundred and seventy five thousand times. And Ripley says, ‘Never was love made manifest by as great an expenditure of time and effort.’ It’s a nice thought, but that's not true. Never was love manifested by such a great expenditure of time and effort. Listen, in the first place God loved us in a way that couldn't be measured when He gave Christ, right? And secondly when we love God back with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength we love God more than that guy loved that lady and we express it not by writing something over a million times, but by a life of obedience.”</blockquote>
