Ruth: Where Providence and Grace Kiss Sermon Series

In the weeks following Easter 2012, we studied the wonderful short Old Testament book Ruth. As we discovered, it is a great narrative about God's grace and His providence. I trust that it was enjoyable as I know God challenged me, exhorted me, encouraged me, and I learned a lot. Here are all of the sermons, blog posts, articles, etc. on the book. June 24, 2012 | Ruth 4:16-22 - Heliocentric Theology: Those Begats, the Gospel Story, and Why You're Not the Center of the Universe

Sunday we finished our series on the book of Ruth. I have really enjoyed this book I hope you return to it often. It is a great story about the Providence and Grace of God colliding. Here is the sermon on Ruth 4:16-22:

¹⁶ Then Naomi took the child and laid him in her lap, and became his nurse. ¹⁷ The neighbor women gave him a name, saying, “A son has been born to Naomi!” So they named him Obed. He is the father of Jesse, the father of David.
¹⁸ Now these are the generations of Perez: to Perez was born Hezron, ¹⁹ and to Hezron was born Ram, and to Ram, Amminadab, ²⁰ and to Amminadab was born Nahshon, and to Nahshon, Salmon, ²¹ and to Salmon was born Boaz, and to Boaz, Obed, ²² and to Obed was born Jesse, and to Jesse, David.

Christological Typologies: Sermon Notes

Last Sunday we discussed grace and redemption and how Ruth 2:14-23 is a great illustration of that. This means that Boaz is a type of Christ in the story. Here are some of the notes regarding various types of Christ and then highlighting Boaz as a redeemer and its relation to Christ as the ultimate Redeemer.

Melchizedek – A Great High Priest

•  Genesis 14:18 – “And Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine. (He was priest of God Most High.)”
• Psalm 110:4 – “The LORD has sworn & will not change his mind ‘You are a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.”
• Hebrews 5:5-10 – “So also Christ did not exalt himself to be made a high priest but was appointed by him who said to him ‘You are my Song today I have begotten you’; as he says also in another place ‘You are a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.’ In the days of his flesh Jesus offered up prayers and supplications, w/ loud cries and tears, to him who was able to save him from death, and he was heard b/c of his reverence. Although he was a son, he learned obedience through what he suffered. And being made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation to all who obey him, being designated by God a high priest after the order of Melchizedek.”

It should be noted regarding this is that the writer of Hebrews goes back to Melchizedek as the type of Christ, not Aaron. Aaron brought the Law, but the gospel isn't law, it is grace.

Moses – A Great Prophet

• Deuteronomy 18:18 – “I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their brothers. And I will put my words in his mouth, and he shall speak to them all that I command him.”
• Matthew 17 – The Transfiguration (Moses & Elijah)
• John 5:46 – “‘For if you believed Moses you would believe me; for he wrote of me.’”
• Acts 3:19-23 – “Repent, therefore, & turn again, that your sins may be blotted out, that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord, and that he may send the Christ appointed for you, Jesus, whom heaven must receive until the time for restoring all the things about which God spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets long ago. Moses said, ‘The Lord God will raise up for you a prophet like me from your brothers. You shall listen to him in whatever he tells you. And it shall be that every soul who does not listen to that prophet shall be destroyed from the people.’”
• Acts 7:37 – “This is the Moses who said to the Israelites, ‘God will raise up for you a prophet like me from your brothers.’”

David – A Great King

•  Jeremiah 30:9 – “But they shall serve the LORD their God and David their king, whom I will raise up for them.”
• Ezekiel 37:24a – “‘My servant David shall be king over them . . .’”
• Hosea 3:5 – “Afterward the children of Israel shall return & seek the LORD their God, & David their king, & they shall come in fear to the LORD & his goodness in the latter days.”
• Matthew 21:9 – “And the crowds that went before him and that followed him were shouting, ‘Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!’”

Boaz – Redeemer

•  Romans 3:23-25a – “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith.”
• Galatians 3:13 – “Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us – for it is written, ‘Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree’”
• Galatians 4:3-5 – “In the say way we also, when we were children, were enslaved to the elementary principles of the world. But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons.”
• Titus 2:14 – “who gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness & to purify for himself a people for his own possession who are zealous for good works.”
• 1 Corinthians 6:20 – “for you were bought w/ a price. So glorify God in your body.”
• 1 Corinthians 7:23 – “You were bought w/ a price; do not become slaves of men.”
