Jesus is King: A Biblical Theology

Last Sunday we discussed from the entirety of Scripture the biblical motif and theme of the Kingship of Jesus. We bare, and I mean barely, scratched the surface. So I want to pass along a more thorough biblical theology of the Kingship of Jesus. So below I want to pass along a number of key biblical passages, prophecies, and texts that extol, predict, and proclaim that Jesus is King.

The Pentateuch

Genesis 49:8-10 –“Judah, your brothers shall praise you; your hand shall be on the neck of your enemies; your father's sons shall bow down before you. Judah is a lion's cub; from the prey, my son, you have gone up. He stooped down; he crouched as a lion & as a lioness; who dares rouse him? The scepter shall not depart from Judah, nor the ruler's staff from between his feet, until tribute comes to him; & to him shall be the obedience of the peoples.

Numbers 24:17 – I see him, but not now; I behold him, but not near: a star shall come out of Jacob, & a scepter shall rise out of Israel; it shall crush the forehead of Moab & break down all the sons of Sheth.

Numbers 24:19 – & one from Jacob shall exercise dominion & destroy the survivors of cities!”

Davidic Kingdom

2 Samuel 7:11-16 – from the time that I appointed judges over my people Israel. & I will give you rest from all your enemies. Moreover, the LORD declares to you that the LORD will make you a house. When your days are fulfilled & you lie down with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring after you, who shall come from your body, & I will establish his kingdom. He shall build a house for my name, & I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. I will be to him a father, & he shall be to me a son. When he commits iniquity, I will discipline him with the rod of men, with the stripes of the sons of men, but my steadfast love will not depart from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I put away from before you. & your house & your kingdom shall be made sure forever before me. Your throne shall be established forever.'”

1 Chronicles 17:9-14 – & I will appoint a place for my people Israel & will plant them, that they may dwell in their own place & be disturbed no more. & violent men shall waste them no more, as formerly, from the time that I appointed judges over my people Israel. & I will subdue all your enemies. Moreover, I declare to you that the LORD will build you a house. When your days are fulfilled to walk with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring after you, one of your own sons, & I will establish his kingdom. He shall build a house for me, & I will establish his throne forever. I will be to him a father, & he shall be to me a son. I will not take my steadfast love from him, as I took it from him who was before you, but I will confirm him in my house & in my kingdom forever, & his throne shall be established forever.'”

1 Chronicles 22 - Then David said, “This is the house of the Lord God, and this is the altar of burnt offering for Israel.”

So David gave orders to gather the foreigners who were in the land of Israel, and he set stonecutters to hew out stones to build the house of God. David prepared large quantities of iron to make the nails for the doors of the gates and for the clamps, and more bronze than could be weighed; and timbers of cedar logs beyond number, for the Sidonians and Tyrians brought large quantities of cedar timber to David. David said, “My son Solomon is young and inexperienced, and the house that is to be built for the Lord shall be exceedingly magnificent, famous and glorious throughout all lands. Therefore now I will make preparation for it.” So David made ample preparations before his death.

Then he called for his son Solomon, and charged him to build a house for the Lord God of Israel. David said to Solomon, “My son, I had intended to build a house to the name of the Lord my God. But the word of the Lord came to me, saying, ‘You have shed much blood and have waged great wars; you shall not build a house to My name, because you have shed so much blood on the earth before Me. Behold, a son will be born to you, who shall be a man of rest; and I will give him rest from all his enemies on every side; for his name shall be Solomon, and I will give peace and quiet to Israel in his days. 10 He shall build a house for My name, and he shall be My son and I will be his father; and I will establish the throne of his kingdom over Israel forever.’ 11 Now, my son, the Lord be with you that you may be successful, and build the house of the Lord your God just as He has spoken concerning you. 12 Only the Lord give you discretion and understanding, and give you charge over Israel, so that you may keep the law of the Lord your God. 13 Then you will prosper, if you are careful to observe the statutes and the ordinances which the Lord commanded Moses concerning Israel. Be strong and courageous, do not fear nor be dismayed. 14 Now behold, with great pains I have prepared for the house of the Lord 100,000 talents of gold and 1,000,000 talents of silver, and bronze and iron beyond weight, for they are in great quantity; also timber and stone I have prepared, and you may add to them. 15 Moreover, there are many workmen with you, stonecutters and masons of stone and carpenters, and all men who are skillful in every kind of work. 16 Of the gold, the silver and the bronze and the iron there is no limit. Arise and work, and may the Lord be with you.”
17 David also commanded all the leaders of Israel to help his son Solomon, saying, 18 “Is not the Lord your God with you? And has He not given you rest on every side? For He has given the inhabitants of the land into my hand, and the land is subdued before the Lord and before His people. 19 Now set your heart and your soul to seek the Lord your God; arise, therefore, and build the sanctuary of the Lord God, so that you may bring the ark of the covenant of the Lord and the holy vessels of God into the house that is to be built for the name of the Lord.”

2 Chronicles 6:5-17 – 'Since the day that I brought my people out of the land of Egypt, I chose no city out of all the tribes of Israel in which to build a house, that my name might be there, & I chose no man as prince over my people Israel; but I have chosen Jerusalem that my name may be there, & I have chosen David to be over my people Israel.' Now it was in the heart of David my father to build a house for the name of the LORD, the God of Israel.  But the LORD said to David my father, 'Whereas it was in your heart to build a house for my name, you did well that it was in your heart. Nevertheless, it is not you who shall build the house, but your son who shall be born to you shall build the house for my name.'  Now the LORD has fulfilled his promise that he made. For I have risen in the place of David my father & sit on the throne of Israel, as the LORD promised, & I have built the house for the name of the LORD, the God of Israel. & there I have set the ark, in which is the covenant of the LORD that he made with the people of Israel.” Then Solomon stood before the altar of the LORD in the presence of all the assembly of Israel & spread out his hands. Solomon had made a bronze platform five cubits long, five cubits wide, & three cubits high, & had set it in the court, & he stood on it. Then he knelt on his knees in the presence of all the assembly of Israel, & spread out his hands toward heaven, & said, “O LORD, God of Israel, there is no God like you, in heaven or on earth, keeping covenant & showing steadfast love to your servants who walk before you with all their heart, who have kept with your servant David my father what you declared to him. You spoke with your mouth, & with your hand have fulfilled it this day. Now therefore, O LORD, God of Israel, keep for your servant David my father what you have promised him, saying, 'You shall not lack a man to sit before me on the throne of Israel, if only your sons pay close attention to their way, to walk in my law as you have walked before me.' Now therefore, O LORD, God of Israel, let your word be confirmed, which you have spoken to your servant David.

2 Chronicles 13:5 – Ought you not to know that the LORD God of Israel gave the kingship over Israel forever to David & his sons by a covenant of salt?

2 Chronicles 21:7 – Yet the LORD was not willing to destroy the house of David, because of the covenant that he had made with David, & since he had promised to give a lamp to him & to his sons forever.

Psalm 89:19-37 - Once You spoke in vision to Your godly ones,
And said, “I have given help to one who is mighty;
I have exalted one chosen from the people.
20 “I have found David My servant;
With My holy oil I have anointed him,
21 With whom My hand will be established;
My arm also will strengthen him.
22 “The enemy will not deceive him,
Nor the son of wickedness afflict him.
23 “But I shall crush his adversaries before him,
And strike those who hate him.
24 “My faithfulness and My lovingkindness will be with him,
And in My name his horn will be exalted.
25 “I shall also set his hand on the sea
And his right hand on the rivers.
26 “He will cry to Me, ‘You are my Father,
My God, and the rock of my salvation.’
27 “I also shall make him My firstborn,
The highest of the kings of the earth.
28 “My lovingkindness I will keep for him forever,
And My covenant shall be confirmed to him.
29 “So I will establish his descendants forever
And his throne as the days of heaven.
30 “If his sons forsake My law
And do not walk in My judgments,
31 If they violate My statutes
And do not keep My commandments,
32 Then I will punish their transgression with the rod
And their iniquity with stripes.
33 “But I will not break off My lovingkindness from him,
Nor deal falsely in My faithfulness.
34 “My covenant I will not violate,
Nor will I alter the utterance of My lips.
35 “Once I have sworn by My holiness;
I will not lie to David.
36 “His descendants shall endure forever
And his throne as the sun before Me.
37 “It shall be established forever like the moon,
And the witness in the sky is faithful.” Selah.

Isaiah 9:7 – Of the increase of his government & of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David & over his kingdom, to establish it & to uphold it with justice & with righteousness from this time forth & forevermore. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will do this.

Isaiah 16:5 – then a throne will be established in steadfast love, & on it will sit in faithfulness in the tent of David one who judges & seeks justice & is swift to do righteousness.”

Isaiah 22:20-25 – In that day I will call my servant Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, & I will clothe him with your robe, & will bind your sash on him, & will commit your authority to his hand. & he shall be a father to the inhabitants of Jerusalem & to the house of Judah. & I will place on his shoulder the key of the house of David. He shall open, & none shall shut; & he shall shut, & none shall open. & I will fasten him like a peg in a secure place, & he will become a throne of honor to his father's house. & they will hang on him the whole honor of his father's house, the offspring & issue, every small vessel, from the cups to all the flagons. In that day, declares the LORD of hosts, the peg that was fastened in a secure place will give way, & it will be cut down & fall, & the load that was on it will be cut off, for the LORD has spoken.”

Jeremiah 23:5 – “Behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD, when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, & he shall reign as king & deal wisely, & shall execute justice & righteousness in the land.

Jeremiah 33:15-26 – In those days & at that time I will cause a righteous Branch to spring up for David, & he shall execute justice & righteousness in the land. In those days Judah will be saved, & Jerusalem will dwell securely. & this is the name by which it will be called: 'The LORD is our righteousness.'”For thus says the LORD: David shall never lack a man to sit on the throne of the house of Israel, & the Levitical priests shall never lack a man in my presence to offer burnt offerings, to burn grain offerings, & to make sacrifices forever.” The word of the LORD came to Jeremiah:”Thus says the LORD: If you can break my covenant with the day & my covenant with the night, so that day & night will not come at their appointed time, then also my covenant with David my servant may be broken, so that he shall not have a son to reign on his throne, & my covenant with the Levitical priests my ministers. As the host of heaven cannot be numbered & the sands of the sea cannot be measured, so I will multiply the offspring of David my servant, & the Levitical priests who minister to me.” The word of the LORD came to Jeremiah: “Have you not observed that these people are saying, 'The LORD has rejected the two clans that he chose'? Thus they have despised my people so that they are no longer a nation in their sight. Thus says the LORD: If I have not established my covenant with day & night & the fixed order of heaven & earth, then I will reject the offspring of Jacob & David my servant & will not choose one of his offspring to rule over the offspring of Abraham, Isaac, & Jacob. For I will restore their fortunes & will have mercy on them.”

Jeremiah 30:9 – But they shall serve the LORD their God & David their king, whom I will raise up for them.

Ezekiel 34:23-24 – & I will set up over them one shepherd, my servant David, & he shall feed them: he shall feed them & be their shepherd. & I, the LORD, will be their God, & my servant David shall be prince among them. I am the LORD; I have spoken.

Ezekiel 37:24-25 – “My servant David shall be king over them, & they shall all have one shepherd. They shall walk in my rules & be careful to obey my statutes. They shall dwell in the land that I gave to my servant Jacob, where your fathers lived. They & their children & their children’s children shall dwell there forever, & David my servant shall be their prince forever.

Hosea 3:5 – Afterward the children of Israel shall return & seek the LORD their God, & David their king, & they shall come in fear to the LORD & to his goodness in the latter days.

"King of Kings & Lord of Lords: The Regal Reign of the Warrior Lamb" - A Sermon Preached by Albert Mohler

We are starting a new sermon series Sunday on the end times (the fancy term is Eschatology). Each year I like for us to spend a few week discussing some doctrine. This year, following last years false prediction from Harold Camping and now with the December 21 nonsense, I thought it would be helpful for us to discuss a few things about the end.

With that in mind, I want to pass along a helpful sermon from the President of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary (my alma mater) on the Kingship of Jesus. We will discuss this ourselves.

SBTS: Dr. Marvin Tate Dies at Age 87

From SBTS Tower's campus newspaper:

Marvin Embry Tate Jr., an alumnus and longtime professor of The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, died Oct.15. He was a professor of Old Testament interpretation from 1960 until 1995, and then a senior professor until 2003.

A memorial service honoring Tate will take place Tuesday, Nov. 20 at Buechel Park Baptist Church in Louisville, Ky., at 11 a.m. A public burial will immediately follow the funeral at Cave Hill Cemetery. The preceding day, Monday Nov. 19, the Tate family will hold a visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Pearson Funeral Home on Breckenridge Ln. in Louisville.

Born May 2 1925, Tate grew up in Washington, Ark. In 1944, he enrolled at Ouachita Baptist University, from which he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in 1947. Tate then attended Southern Seminary, earning a divinity degree in 1952 and a doctorate in 1958.

While finishing his final degree, Tate spent three years pastoring a church in Tulsa, Okla., during which time he married his wife, Julia Moorman. After he graduated, Tate and his new wife moved to Texas, where he taught at Wayland Baptist College. He joined the Southern Seminary faculty in 1960. In 1965, Tate signed the Abstract of Principles, and in 1992, Tate took an endowed position, as the John R. Sampey Professor of Old Testament — a chair he held until his retirement from full-time teaching in 1995.

Tate leaves behind his wife of 52 years and his five children, Sarah, Martha, Betsey, Marvin and Virgina.

Southern Seminary’s Office of Communications will post a full obituary after the weekend.

God's Providence in Scripture

Tomorrow we will finish our series on the book of Philippians by discussing contentment. Key to contentment, as we will see, is God's providence. Scripture presents a high view of God's providence wherein He is in complete control over every aspect of our lives & of history. Below are some important passages of Scripture that defend this view:

Isaiah 37:26 - “Have you not heard? Long ago I did it, From ancient times I planned it. Now I have brought it to pass, That you should turn fortified cities into ruinous heaps.

Isaiah 22:11 - And you made a reservoir between the two walls For the waters of the old pool. But you did not depend on Him who made it, Nor did you take into consideration Him who planned it long ago.

Psalm 139:16 - Your eyes have seen my unformed substance; And in Your book were all written The days that were ordained for me, When as yet there was not one of them.

Job 14:5 - “Since his days are determined, The number of his months is with You; And his limits You have set so that he cannot pass.

Isaiah 46:10-11 - Declaring the end from the beginning, And from ancient times things which have not been done, Saying, ‘My purpose will be established, And I will accomplish all My good pleasure’; 11 Calling a bird of prey from the east, The man of My purpose from a far country. Truly I have spoken; truly I will bring it to pass. I have planned it, surely I will do it.

Isaiah 14:24-27 - 24 The Lord of hosts has sworn saying, “Surely, just as I have intended so it has happened, and just as I have planned so it will stand, 25 to break Assyria in My land, and I will trample him on My mountains. Then his yoke will be removed from them and his burden removed from their shoulder. 26 This is the plan devised against the whole earth; and this is the hand that is stretched out against all the nations. 27 For the Lord of hosts has planned, and who can frustrate it? And as for His stretched-out hand, who can turn it back?”

Job 42:2 - “I know that You can do all things, And that no purpose of Yours can be thwarted.

Jeremiah 23:20 - “The anger of the Lord will not turn back Until He has performed and carried out the purposes of His heart; In the last days you will clearly understand it.

Zechariah 1:6 - But did not My words and My statutes, which I commanded My servants the prophets, overtake your fathers? Then they repented and said, ‘As the Lord of hosts purposed to do to us in accordance with our ways and our deeds, so He has dealt with us.’”’”

Proverbs 16:4 - The Lord has made everything for its own purpose, Even the wicked for the day of evil.

Isaiah 40:12 - Who has measured the waters in the hollow of His hand, And marked off the heavens by the span, And calculated the dust of the earth by the measure, And weighed the mountains in a balance And the hills in a pair of scales?

Jeremiah 10:12-13 - 12 It is He who made the earth by His power, Who established the world by His wisdom; And by His understanding He has stretched out the heavens. 13 When He utters His voice, there is a tumult of waters in the heavens, And He causes the clouds to ascend from the end of the earth; He makes lightning for the rain, And brings out the wind from His storehouses.
Proverbs 16:33 - The lot is cast into the lap, But its every decision is from the Lord.
Proverbs 19:21 - Many plans are in a man’s heart, But the counsel of the Lord will stand.

Luke 21:20-22 - 20 “But when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then recognize that her desolation is near. 21 Then those who are in Judea must flee to the mountains, and those who are in the midst of the city must leave, and those who are in the country must not enter the city; 22 because these are days of vengeance, so that all things which are written will be fulfilled.

Matthew 26:24 - 24 The Son of Man is to go, just as it is written of Him; but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been good for that man if he had not been born.”

Matthew 1:22 - 22 Now all this took place to fulfill what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet:

Acts 2:23 - this Man, delivered over by the predetermined plan and foreknowledge of God, you nailed to a cross by the hands of godless men and put Him to death.

Acts 4:27-2827 For truly in this city there were gathered together against Your holy servant Jesus, whom You anointed, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, along with the Gentiles and the peoples of Israel, 28 to do whatever Your hand and Your purpose predestined to occur.
Acts 1:16 - 16 “Brethren, the Scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit foretold by the mouth of David concerning Judas, who became a guide to those who arrested Jesus.
1 Corinthians 12:18 - 18 But now God has placed the members, each one of them, in the body, just as He desired.
1 Corinthians 15:38 - 38 But God gives it a body just as He wished, and to each of the seeds a body of its own.
Colossians 1:10 - 10 so that you will walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, to please Him in all respects, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God;
Galatians 3:8 - The Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel beforehand to Abraham, saying, “All the nations will be blessed in you.
Galatians 1:15 - 15 But when God, who had set me apart even from my mother’s womb and called me through His grace, was pleased
Romans 9:20-23 - 20 On the contrary, who are you, O man, who answers back to God? The thing molded will not say to the molder, “Why did you make me like this,” will it? 21 Or does not the potter have a right over the clay, to make from the same lump one vessel for honorable use and another for common use? 22 What if God, although willing to demonstrate His wrath and to make His power known, endured with much patience vessels of wrath prepared for destruction? 23 And He did so to make known the riches of His glory upon vessels of mercy, which He prepared beforehand for glory,
Ephesians 1:11-12 - 11 also we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to His purpose who works all things after the counsel of His will, 12 to the end that we who were the first to hope in Christ would be to the praise of His glory.
Romans 8:28 - 28 And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.

House of Worship: A Brief History of Goshen Baptist Church

Goshen Baptist Church at Glen Dean, Kentucky is recognized asthe oldest continuous existing Baptist meeting house in BReckinridge County.*

November 23, 1808, a group of baptized believers met in the home of Thomas Owen Sr. Baptist ministers, Water Stallard, Alexander McDougal and Warren Cash served as the Presbytery of Council of recognition and recognized as members of the Salem Association of Kentucky.

The United Baptist Church of Jesus Christ was given the name of "Goshen" by its first pastor, James Haden Moorman. Goshen means "land of plenty and comfort." The congregation met in homes until 1810 when the first log "House of Worship" was built near Long Lick Creek on the Thomas Owen farm. In 1828 another log house was built in the long Lick Creek vicinity to serve as the meeting house and school until a shcoolhouse could be built. In 1839, under the leadership of their pastor, Simeon Buchanan, pastor for twenty-three years, there was a great Revival resulting in many additions of both Blacks and Whites. with rapidly growing membership, a movement was made to erect a new "House of Worship." The frame building was built on land donated by Brother Grant Owen. the new "House of Worship" was in full use by July 1842.

In 1872 the members voted to move near Rock Lick Creek in the area of the old Goshen Bridge. The new frame uilding was built on land donated by W. J. Dean. Jese Moorman, Henry R. Dean and Thomas O. Moorman were named Trustee's.

The congregation moved again in the early 1900's to an early railroad settlement, Glen Dean, Kentucky. Members that lived west of the creek wanted to establish a church. This vote was approved and with the assistance of the members, Black Lick Church was formed and is active today. In 1904, both churches were established in their communities. Black Lick Church and Goshen Baptist Church both became members of the Breckinridge Baptist Association, which was organized in 1903.

Reverend D. B. clapp was the first pastor at the new location of Goshen Baptist Church. In 1956 an educational building was built. The bell was later removed from the cupola. The church purchased a mobile home to be used as a parsonage in 1961. Over th eyears, the original church has been renovated with lowered ceilings, handicap entrance, walkways, kitchen and bathrooms, furnace and new pews. In 1995 a lot on Highway 105 was purchased to build a parsonage. September 28, 1998 the church celebrated their debt free status on the parsonage with a note burning and dedication service.

Goshen's former pastors and families have been Bible believing, God fearing people who have gone on to serve our Lord in numerous ministries, as teachers, missionaries, professors, pastors and other areas of ministry.

* This is a history taken from an old, one page history book my wife and I discovered while cleaning out one of the rooms in the Sunday School building. In order to ensure that this history will not be lost to history, I thought I would reprint it here. The pamphlet was written in 1904 - the 100 anniversary of the current location of our church.

November 4, 2012 | Philippians 3:12-4:1: The Joy of Pressing On

Sunday we looked at the end of chapter 3 of Paul's letter to the Philippians as he encourages us to "press on" in sanctification. Let us not fall for the lie of religion that meshes justification and sanctification, but let us be free in Christ to obey Christ. Let us press on.

12 Not that I have already obtained it or have already become perfect, but I press on so that I may lay hold of that for which also I was laid hold of by Christ Jesus. 13 Brethren, I do not regard myself as having laid hold of it yet; but one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead, 14 I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. 15 Let us therefore, as many as are perfect, have this attitude; and if in anything you have a different attitude, God will reveal that also to you; 16 however, let us keep living by that same standard to which we have attained.

17 Brethren, join in following my example, and observe those who walk according to the pattern you have in us. 18 For many walk, of whom I often told you, and now tell you even weeping, that they are enemies of the cross of Christ, 19 whose end is destruction, whose god is their appetite, and whose glory is in their shame, who set their minds on earthly things. 20 For our citizenship is in heaven, from which also we eagerly wait for a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ; 21 who will transform the body of our humble state into conformity with the body of His glory, by the exertion of the power that He has even to subject all things to Himself.

Therefore, my beloved brethren whom I long to see, my joy and crown, in this way stand firm in the Lord, my beloved.
