January 19, 2014 | Matthew 19:10-12 - What's the Point?: Marriage, Singleness, & Living for the Glory of God

After dealing with the issue of marriage and divorce, Jesus then turns his attention to the question of marriage and singleness in Matthew 19:10-12.
10 The disciples *said to Him, “If the relationship of the man with his wife is like this, it is better not to marry.” 11 But He said to them, “Not all men can accept this statement, but only those to whom it has been given. 12 For there are eunuchs who were born that way from their mother’s womb; and there are eunuchs who were made eunuchs by men; and there are also eunuchs who made themselves eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. He who is able to accept this, let him accept it.”

January 12, 2014 | Matthew 19:1-9: All the King's Horses: marriage, Divorce & the Gospel

Its a new year and that means we are returning to the life and ministry of Jesus. This year we are picking up, yet again, where we left off last year. Before Resurrection Sunday last year we finished chapter 18 and so this year we begin with Matthew 19:1-9.
When Jesus had finished these words, He departed from Galilee and came into the region of Judea beyond the Jordan; and large crowds followed Him, and He healed them there.
Some Pharisees came to Jesus, testing Him and asking, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any reason at all?” And He answered and said, “Have you not read that He who created them from the beginning made them male and female, and said, ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’? So they are no longer two, but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let no man separate.” They *said to Him, “Why then did Moses command to give her a certificate of divorce and send her away?” He *said to them, “Because of your hardness of heart Moses permitted you to divorce your wives; but from the beginning it has not been this way. And I say to you, whoever divorces his wife, except for immorality, and marries another woman commits adultery.”

November 24, 2013 | Colossians 3:18-19: The New Man and Marriage

Sunday we continued to walk through Paul's wonderful letter to the church in Colossae. After exhorting us to put on Christ (3:1-17), Paul turns to address social ramifications of the gospel. If we have been raised with Christ (3:1a), then exercising such a resurrection looks like the following in marriage:
18 Wives, be subject to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord. 19 Husbands, love your wives and do not be embittered against them.

Driscoll on Neither Feminism or Chauvinism

I'm studying for tonight's Bible study on the doctrine of man and I came across the following quote from Mark Driscoll on the creation of Eve from Genesis 2.

“So the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he slept took one of his ribs and closed up that place with flesh.” This is beautiful. Everything is created by God’s word. The man is created from the dust of the earth by God’s metaphorical hands. And the woman is created from the rib, the side of the man. This shows that the woman is not to be out ahead of him, as feminism would teach, or behind him, as chauvinism would teach, but alongside of him as an equal image-bearer of God, as the Scriptures teach.

I like the language here.  Feminism and chauvinism is nothing more than an extreme reaction to the other that fails to solve the real problem.  Complementarianism balances these two.  Men and women aren't better than each other, but different and unique.  Furthermore, biblical marriage is a picture of the Trinity where there is a unified diversity.  Men and women are different, though unified.  This is why intimacy (not just sexual, though certainly including it) is critical.  It one out of two.

It is critical to remember that every time fallen man tries to fix a certain extreme, it inevitably goes to the other all the while missing the point.  The turn from chauvinism to feminism perfectly illustrates this tendency.

My Waffle Wedded Wife: Don't Get Nervous Engaged Couples

This year we will have the joy of seeing several of the couples in our church get married.  In honor of these engagements I recommend the following video of what not to do at your wedding.  This is pretty funny.

Some More Light Reading: On Lust, Marriage, Pornography, and Cohabitation

I wanted to point everyone out on an article I wrote on the porn industry and how the recession is affecting it. The news isn't as good as one would think. Click here to read it.

The Great Recession or the Recession that Made Us Great?: Pornography and the Frugality of Lust

I also want to point everyone to a recent article written by Dr. R. Albert Mohler, Jr., President of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, regarding marriage, divorce, and cohabitation. Mohler always writes must-read articles and this is certainly one of them. Thanks to our culture's easy access to divorce and the high rate of divorce, many are beginning to live together before getting married. Mohler shows why this is a problem. To read it, click here.

Some Light Reading: On Lust

I just wanted to pass along some of the reading I did last week on the issue of lust, sexual sin, fornication, and pornography. There are a few books and articles that I will not list do to its content, but this is a good list to get you started:

Joshua Harris - Sex is Not the Problem (Lust Is): Sexual Purity in a Lust-Saturated World - this was the best and most important book I read. I highly recommend that everyone (young and old) read this book.

David Akin - God on Sex: The Creator's Ideas about Love, Intimacy, and Marriage - This is a great book on Song of Solomon.

Craig Gross - Dirty Little Secret: Uncovering the Truth Behind Porn - This is more of a book about revealing the darkness of the porn industry. Its a call for Christians to respond to the pornography problem especially addiction.

Dr. R. Albert Mohler, Jr. - Desire and Deceit: The Real Cost of the New Sexual Tolerance - Everything Mohler writes is worth writing.

Stephen Arteburn - Every Man's Battle - This is standard reading on the issue of fighting lust.

Emerson Eggerich - Love and Respect: The Love She Most Desires, the Respect he so Desperately Needs

CJ Maheny - Sex, Romance, and the Glory of God: What Every Christian Husband Needs to Know - This is a must read for every engaged and married man. Its a short and very important book.

Jim Burgen - What's the Big Deal About Sex? Loving God's Way - This is by far the easiest read on the issue of sex available, especially for young people. The author covers every major topic from a biblical perspective. I read this when I was a teenager and we went through it when I was a youth pastor. Plus, Amazon has used copies starting at a penny!

Richard and Sharon Phillips - Holding Hands, Holding Hearts - Recovering a Biblical View of Christian Dating - This is the most comprehensive treatment of what the Bible says about dating. Highly recommend.

Mark Driscoll and Gerry Breshears - Death By Love: Letters From the Cross - this is one of my favorite books of all time. Though it isn't about sex or lust, the authors take real life issues (including sexuality) and show how the cross shows us how to deal with them.

This should get you started. More could be added and I may add more later. Hope this helps!

This is just hilarious. I will a $1 to anyone that does this at a wedding I perform. Although I must warn, it may not be the best way to start off a marriage.

Desiring God Ministries:

I found this blog post insightful for those in a relationship and to those considering getting married. Marriage should not be first discussed after the couple gets engaged. But prior to the engagement, the couple should discuss the various issues surrounding marriage. The following list of questions is a good guide on what sort of questions to ask. I hope this is helpful. To read the original post, click here. Desiring God Ministries is the ministry of John Piper.

Theology

  • What do you believe about...everything?
  • Perhaps read through the Desiring God Affirmation of Faith to see where each other is on various biblical doctrines.
  • Discover how you form your views. What is the reasoning-believing process? How do you handle the Bible?

Worship and Devotion

  • How important is corporate worship? Other participation in church life?
  • How important is it to be part of a small accountability/support group?
  • What is the importance of music in life and worship?
  • What are your daily personal devotional practices? Prayer, reading, meditation, memorization.
  • What would our family devotions look like? Who leads out in this?
  • Are we doing this now in an appropriate way: praying together about our lives and future, reading the Bible together?

Husband and Wife

  • What is the meaning of headship and submission in the Bible and in our marriage?
  • What are expectations about situations where one of you might be alone with someone of the opposite sex?
  • How are tasks shared in the home: cleaning, cooking, washing dishes, yard work, car upkeep, repairs, shopping for food, and household stuff?
  • What are the expectations for togetherness?
  • What is an ideal non-special evening?
  • How do you understand who and how often sex is initiated?
  • Who does the checkbook—or are there two?

Children

  • If and when, should we have children? Why?
  • How many?
  • How far apart?
  • Would we consider adoption?
  • What are the standards of behavior?
  • What are the appropriate ways to discipline them? How many strikes before they’re...whatever?
  • What are the expectations of time spent with them and when they go to bed?
  • What signs of affection will you show them?
  • What about school? Home school? Christian school? Public school?

Lifestyle

  • Own a home or not? Why?
  • What kind of neighborhood? Why?

Married With Children . . . Lots of Them!: What We Can Learn From the Duggar Family

This Sunday for Mother's Day, I will likely be referring to an article I wrote regarding the growing Duggar family. As many know, the Duggars have 18 kids and will probably have more. They have their own show and my wife watched it constantly in the weeks prior and after she gave birth to our own son, Elijah.

After their 16th child, an article was written in the San Francisco Gate regarding this family that shocked me. The author goes beyond journalist objectivity and attacks the family as a bunch of homophobes, bigots Christians in whose kids will grow up as mind-numbed robots just like their parents and will not receive the type of attention they need.

In response to the article, I wrote an article critiquing the argument from the SF Gate. I encourage you to read both articles and see what you think. The reason I bring this up is being that this Sunday is Mother's Day, I am reminded of the confusion our culture has regarding children, family, and marriage. The culture is left scratching its head when watching the Duggars and yet as Christians, we must give God the glory for a family willing to raise children, not to mention 18 of them!, to obey and follow our Savior.

As a culture, and even as Christians, we need to recover this understanding of children. They are not burdens, but blessings. Children are worth the investment (lack of better word) and time. There are two ways in which we are called to fulfill the Great Commission: evangelize and have children.

I encourage you to read the articles for yourself as I believe they will open your eyes to conversations taking place in the culture that are rather shocking. It is this sort of rhetoric and nonsense that rationalizes abortion, euthanasia, infanticide, divorce, cohabitation, the culture of death, and the many other issues we face today. Whenever we view children as a burden and marriage as just a certificate (rather than a covenant) is the moment our culture (including the Church) begins, and has begun, to decay before our very eyes.

Here are some excerts from the SF Gate article:

...this might be the most disquieting photo you see all year, this bizarreDuggar family of 18 spotless white hyperreligious interchangeable people with alarmingly bad hair, the kids ranging in ages from 1 to 17, worse than those nuked Smurfs in that UNICEF commercial and worse than all the horrific rubble in Pakistan and worse than the cluster-bomb nightmare that is Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise having a child as they suck the skin from each other's Scientological faces and even worse than that huge 13-foot python which ate that six-foot alligator and then exploded...

...if you study the above photo (or the even more disturbing family Web site) too closely you will become rashy and depressed and you will crave large quantities of alcohol and loud aggressive music to deflect the creeping feeling that this planet is devolving faster than you can suck the contents from a large bong?...

Perhaps the point is this: Why does this sort of bizarre hyperbreeding only seem to afflict antiseptic megareligious families from the Midwest? In other words -- assuming Michelle and Jim Bob and their massive brood of cookie-cutter Christian kidbots will all be, as the charming photo suggests, never allowed near a decent pair of designer jeans or a tolerable haircut from a recent decade, and assuming that they will all be tragically encoded with the values of the homophobic asexual Christian right -- where are the forces that shall help neutralize their effect on the culture? Where is the counterbalance, to offset the damage?

See why I am concerned?

The family have also written a book which I believe you can check out at our local library - 20 and Counting.

Behold, children are a heritage from the LORD, the fruit of the womb a reward. Like arrows in the hand of a warrior are the children of one’s youth. Blessed is the man who fills his quiver with them! -Psalm 127:3-5a
